Diamond. A different beginning.

THE ESSENTIAL IDEA

Laboratory-grown diamonds are diamonds. Moissanite and cubic zirconia are different materials.

UNDERSTAND THE DETAILS

What laboratory-grown means.

Laboratory-grown diamonds share diamond’s essential chemical composition and crystal structure. Their growth takes place in controlled technological conditions rather than through geological processes.

Specialized laboratory testing can identify growth origin. Appearance alone is not a reliable way to distinguish natural from laboratory-grown diamonds.

UNDERSTAND THE DETAILS

Two routes to crystal growth.

The principal methods are high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Both create diamond, with growth features that gemological laboratories can study.

A laboratory-grown origin does not make every stone the same. Compare the actual appearance, dimensions and quality assessment.

UNDERSTAND THE DETAILS

Read the individual report.

Confirm the issuing laboratory, report number and stated origin. Use the laboratory’s own verification service and check the document’s date and service type.

GIA’s revised D-to-Z laboratory-grown service, introduced in October 2025, uses overall Premium or Standard assessments. Other laboratories and older reports can use different descriptions.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Questions, answered.

Is laboratory-grown the same as an imitation?

No. A laboratory-grown diamond is diamond. A simulant resembles diamond while having a different composition or properties.
