Find your silhouette.

THE ESSENTIAL IDEA

Shape describes the outline. Cut describes how facets interact with light.

UNDERSTAND THE DETAILS

Begin with the outline.

A softly rounded outline, a long silhouette or a crisp square can change the character of a piece. Choose the outline you enjoy, then compare individual diamonds within that shape.

Step-cut silhouettes such as emerald and Asscher have a different visual rhythm from brilliant-style cuts. View photographs and moving video before deciding.

UNDERSTAND THE DETAILS

Look beyond the silhouette.

Oval, pear and marquise diamonds can show a bow-tie-shaped shadow. Judge its appearance as the stone moves, along with overall brightness and symmetry.

Pointed tips and corners deserve protection in the setting. Ask how the design supports the shape you choose.

Equal carat weights can have different visible dimensions. Compare the report’s millimeter measurements.
